Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Defined
(AIDS) The most severe manifestation of infection with HIV. There are numerous opportunistic infections and neoplasms (cancers) that, in the presence of HIV infection, constitute an AIDS diagnosis. Persons with these late-stage infections can suffer attacks of the lung, brain, eyes, and other organs, as well as severe weight loss. A CD4 count of less than 200 also constitutes diagnosis of AIDS.

The Department of Health reported Tuesday that while the number of recorded Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS cases in the Philippines continue to be at a low level, the numbers are actually rising.

The Department of Health (DoH) is undertaking measures to prevent what Secretary Francisco Duque III said might be a “full-blown epidemic” of HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired immune deficiency syndrome), as he acknowledged an increase in cases despite the Philippines’ being a “low prevalence” country.
