May 18, 2009: A recent study shows HIV-positive patients who don't seek medical attention until they have AIDS-related conditions can reduce their risk of death or other complications by half if they get antiretroviral treatment early on. The study results could lead to widespread changes in treatment for HIV patients, particularly those diagnosed at an advanced stage, experts say.

- Life Expectancy With HIV Increases Dramatically: A 20-year-old HIV-positive person starting antiretroviral (ARV) therapy today can expect to live, on average, to the age of 69, according to new calculations published July 26 in The Lancet. The study authors say this is a life expectancy increase of 37 percent over projections for 20-year-olds starting ARVs during the early years of combination treatment. 32 user comments.

Martin Brinkhof of the University of Berne, who led the study, said that very high mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa have "substant ially declined" since the introduction of HAART, "but what remains unclear is to what extent this reduction in mortality approaches the levels seen in the general population.&qu ot;
