The following information is about Hypoglecemia (Low Blood Sugar).

Hypoglecemia (Low Blood Sugar) Defined

This can occur in a newborn right after delivery when the mother has gestational diabetes. The condition typically occurs if the mother's blood sugar levels have been consistently high because it causes the fetus to have a high level of insulin in its circulation. After the baby is delivered, he or she continues to have a high insulin level, but no longer has the high level of sugar from its mother, which causes the newborn's blood sugar level to become low. In the hospital's newborn nursery, your baby's blood sugar level will be checked, and if it's too low, he or she may need glucose given intravenously. Hypoglycemia can cause weakness, headache, hunger, vision problems, anxiety, and, if untreated, delirium, and death. It is also thought to contribute to PMS.
