The following information is about Mammography.

Mammography Defined

An X-ray procedure using a special low irradiation technique to detect abnormal change in breast tissue. Its main use is to detect breast lumps that are too small to be found during breast self examination or physical examination. The higher the level of estrogen (and possibly progestin) the more dense breast tissue is and the less likely that a mammogram will see abnormal tissue. It has many false positive readings meaning that there is no cancer yet the test was abnormal.

  • I Can Survive Breast Cancer: Breast cancer screening is an important part of preventive care. A mammogram helps detect early breast cancer. Breast cancer screening means checking a woman?s breasts for cancer before there are signs or symptoms of the disease.

  • Elsevier Article Locator: Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease that has a worldwide annual incidence of over 1 million cases. In the UK this equates to over 39000 new diagnoses per year. Most of these cases occur in postmenopausal women, and the incidence in both this age group and in younger women is rising. Most of the major risk factors for breast cancer such as female sex, age and a family history of the disease cannot be avoided. However, there is established evidence that earlier detection of breast cancer through mammographic screening does significantly reduce mortality, by up to 24%.
  • Elsevier Article Locator: Conclusion: Despite educational campaigns and high media coverage, the possibilities for improving the ?classical? methods of tumor detection in breast cancer, self-detection and clinical breast examination, seem to be at their limit. The significant decrease in tumor size at time of detection observed in the last years is primarily only due to the increased use of breast imaging. Improved detection of smaller tumors may presumably be reached only by an increased use of radiological procedures.
  • Elsevier Article Locator: Among the survivors in 2003, the percentage of breast cancers detected by mammography was much higher after 2001 (59%) than before 1993 (29%). Breast cancer survivors with less than high school education or less than US$ 20,000 household income were less likely to report detection by mammography. Conclusions: Women reported mammography-de tected breast cancer at a slightly higher rate than published studies of mammography sensitivity and use would suggest. Lower rates of mammography-de tected breast cancers among survivors with low income or low education raise the question whether mammography is underutilized as a diagnostic tool, especially for underserved women.

  • New Test For Detecting Early Signs of Breast Cancer: Mammography is recommended by age 40, but Halo offers an alternative to younger women for detecting early signs of breast cancer. The "Halo Breast Pap Test" goes beyond x-rays by detecting abnormal cells as much as eight years before they become cancer. The test detects 95-percent of the most common breast cancer.
  • Mammogram for Young Women: Studies have shown that a mammogram is less likely to detect breast cancer in young women. Neomatrix has developed a breast cancer test that can discover cellular changes years before a lump can be detected by a mammogram.

Tue Sep 23

  • Imaginis - General Information on Mammography: As of April 28, 1999, a new version of the Mammography Quality Standards Law mandates that all women who have mammograms must be informed of the results in writing. However, if you have not been informed of your results within a week or so of your mammogram, do not assume they are normal. Follow up with your referring physician or healthcare provider who will provide you with the results. The US Food and Drug Administration reports that mammography can find 85 to 90 percent of breast cancers in women over 50 and can discover a lump up to two years before it can be felt.
